Saginaw United decided to double up on “firsts” in its boys basketball season-opener Tuesday.
The Phoenix played their first boys basketball game in history on the home court at the Saginaw United Fieldhouse, christening the court with its first win of the season, beating Detroit Catholic Central, 67-56.
“It was a great atmosphere,” United coach Julian Taylor said. “The kids were excited. The community was excited. It felt good to get a big win in the fieldhouse in the home opener in front of a sold-out crowd. It was an awesome feeling.”
The victory avenges the 2024-25 season-opening loss to Catholic Central, which is coached by former Buena Vista and Notre Dame star Tory Jackson. The Phoenix played its first season after Saginaw High and Arthur Hill merged in 2024-25, but the team used
