The US-led talks on ending Russia’s war against Ukraine are ongoing. Discussions between President Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and the Kremlin appeared to have stalled.

Putin has since raised the stakes with comments at an investment forum held by VTB Bank. He reportedly said: "We are not going to fight with Europe, but if Europe wants to fight us, we are ready right now."

Why has he turned on Europe? EU countries and the UK have been pushing the UK for a better deal for Ukraine. This has annoyed the Kremlin.

Putin accused Europe of amending peace proposals with “demands that are absolutely unacceptable to Russia”, thus “blocking the entire peace process”. He has accused Kyiv’s European allies of sabotage.
