Pittsburghers will soon be able to hail a ride with no driver.
Waymo, the autonomous ride-hailing service based in Mountain View, Calif., announced Wednesday that it will expand operations to Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, St. Louis and Baltimore.
This week, the team will start manually driving its cars around Downtown until it can “validate” its abilities and launch officially in the Steel City, according to Waymo’s blog.
The announcement read: “Yinz ready to ride?”
Joanna Doven of the AI Strike Team called it a “full-circle moment.”
“We have been talking about self-driving cars for decades,” Ms. Doven said. “It is the moment, now, that it’s being deployed, and we can now remind people Waymo is here and, ‘Oh, by the way, its roots are laid in Pittsburgh at Carnegie Mellon University.’”
