A 4-year-old child died after state troopers were called to a medical emergency in Sussex County on Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 2, authorities said.

The incident happened at 12:34 p.m. on South Shore Drive in Wantage Township, II Christopher Postorino said. Troopers responded for a medical assist and found the child unresponsive.

The child later died as a result of their injuries, Postorino said.

Assistant Sussex County Prosecutor Jonathan McMeen released the following statement:

We are currently assisting the New Jersey State Police with the investigation. The cause and manner of the death are still being investigated, in conjunction with the Morris County Medical Examiner’s Office.
