The Gilbert Town Council passed an ordinance Tuesday night allowing staff to administratively approve preliminary plats, a change required under recently adopted state law.

The action passed unanimously without discussion along with other public hearing items, following a study session presentation that outlined the changes.

During that study session, Development Services Principal Planner Veronica Gonzalez explained that House Bill 2447 mandates cities and towns to approve preliminary plats without a public hearing beginning Jan. 1, 2026.

Staff said this eliminates local discretion previously in place and requires Gilbert to update its development code to comply.
