Border officials have seized 209 kilograms of opium hidden in a shipping container.

The Canada Border Services Agency said the opium was found on March 26 in a container that arrived in Metro Vancouver.

The opium was found hidden inside an 11,000 kilogram piece of commercial machinery at the agency’s Burnaby container examination facility in a container originating from the United Arab Emirates.

A video released by CBSA showed a welder cutting through a large piece of equipment and images of several packages of opium that were found inside.

Officers seized 209 kilograms, making up nearly a half of the 448 kg of opioids, including opium, methadone and morphine, seized by border officials in Canada last fiscal year.
