The National Weather Service issued a weather alert at 4:54 p.m. on Sunday for heavy snow until 5:30 p.m. for Cayuga, Onondaga, Tompkins, Madison and Cortland counties.

"At 4:54 p.m., a band of heavy snow was over Otisco, or 12 miles south of Syracuse moving east at 25 MPH," comments the weather service.

Locations impacted by the alert include Cortland, Pompey, Homer, Otisco, Groton, Locke, Genoa, Preble, Moravia and Scott.

According to the weather service, "Use extra caution if you must travel into or through this band of heavy snow. Rapid changes in visibility and potentially slick roads may lead to accidents."
