FLINT, MI -- A federal judge has authorized a plan to pay nearly 26,000 claimants their share of Flint water crisis payments, a decision that comes more than four years after the historic $626.25 million settlement was approved.

U.S. District Court Judge Judith E. Levy issued an order authorizing Special Master Deborah Greenspan to finalize the terms for distributing the settlement funds on Friday, Dec. 5.

Although the order starts the process of issuing letters, telling claimants how much they will receive and how to receive payments, it does not specify how quickly that will happen.

A posting on the court-authorized settlement website says only that the payment process is being finalized and that no payment letters or requests for bank account information have been sent.
