BEAUMONT, Texas — The Texas Education Agency announced Tuesday it will take over the Beaumont Independent School District, citing five consecutive years of failing accountability ratings at two campuses, a move that will replace the district’s elected board of trustees and superintendent with a state-appointed board of managers starting next school year.
The decision follows chronic low performance at ML King Middle School and Fehl-Price Elementary, according to TEA Commissioner Mike Morath. Beaumont ISD now joins a list of eight Texas school districts under state control, a position the district previously experienced during a 2014 takeover.
