A 51-year-old Toronto man has been arrested for fraud after allegedly being caught with more than $100,000-worth of gift cards that Hamilton police say were being used in a scam.
The investigation began Wednesday when officers were called to the Shoppers Drug Mart on Main Street East at Sherman Avenue after staff saw a man manipulating gift cards on display.
Detectives allege the suspect was replacing bar codes on cards with bar codes belonging to cards already in his possession, said Const. Trevor McKenna. This means that an unsuspecting customer could buy the altered gift card, but when money is added to it at the cash register those funds would instead go to a card held by the suspect.
