SILVER SPRING, Md. — Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service firefighters were responsible for spraying a baseball diamond in Silver Spring during batting practice, canceling an amateur baseball game, a department spokesperson said Tuesday.

The statement hoped to shift the blame for Thursday's incident away from the Silver Spring Fire Department whose fire station is next door to the Montgomery Blair Baseball Stadium, the home turf of the Silver-Spring Takoma Thunderbolts.

"The individuals involved in this incident are not volunteer members of the Silver Spring Fire Department or any of the 19 local volunteer fire and rescue departments in Montgomery County. Rather, the personnel in question are career employees of MCFRS," a MCFRS spokesperson wrote. "We reiterate this clarification
