OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - The blazing heat this week is difficult to escape. For people without shelter, it’s nearly impossible.
There are organizations providing help for homeless people working to beat the heat.
Law enforcement and nonprofits are handing out water, supplies and pamphlets in encampments.
“I knock on encampments and try to offer people rides to services,” said Deputy Joseph Martinec with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
On this day, he’s handing out pamphlets to a group of people living under a bridge in Omaha.
“The heat index is up above 110 degrees,” said Martinec.
He asked one of the residents, William Tarkington, whether he had a place to get water.
