LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - The Lufkin Fire Department is teaching hands-only CPR to anyone who’s interested, and at no cost.

“What we are trying to do is improve the cardiac arrest survival rate in our community,” Fire chief Jesse Moody said.

Three years ago, the Lufkin Fire Department ceased emergency medical services to Angelina County and instead focused on the city. Moody said it led to more successful resuscitations in the city limits.

“When I talk about successful resuscitation with cardiac arrest, I’m talking about a person that was in cardiac arrest when we arrived, we got them back and they leave the hospital to live a relatively normal life,” Moody said.

He said they saved 10 people in the first year and 13 people the next. This year in May they saved two lives and one in July.
