LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - With the first day of school just one week away, Mercy Clinic of Laredo is providing free sports physicals and health screenings for students.

The event will take place Saturday, Aug. 9, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 2500 Zacatecas Street. Athletes 12 and older must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Sister Rosemary Welsh said the clinic has offered this service for over 25 years, with medical students from the University of Texas Health Science Center presenting important health topics. This week’s focus will be on sextortion, with presentations for both students and parents.

Officials say the screenings and educational presentations aim to keep young athletes healthy and informed as they start the school year.
