LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Early signs of construction were seen at the site for Nebraska’s new state prison in Lincoln on Wednesday. The new 1,512-bed facility will replace the aging Nebraska State Penitentiary.

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services and Hausmann Construction, a company based out of Lincoln, finalized $312,259,000 contract on July 24, and construction efforts began last Tuesday.

Signs of life appeared at the site on North 70th Street by the interstate, including signage showing it belongs to NDCS and several crates with Hausmann logos.

A spokesman for Hausmann said the company is going to meet with the State on Friday to discuss pre-construction details. Crews currently working at the site are cutting weeds and grass to make room for trailers in the coming weeks.
