MINT HILL, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – If it were a home improvement show, you might call it “This Old Schoolhouse.”

This summer, painters refreshed remnants of local history at the Carl J. McEwen Historic Village. Since 1985, it’s where many local buildings have been rehomed, giving visitors a snapshot of rural Mint Hill generations ago.

“Paint, and stain, and restore all of the buildings that we had accumulated over 40 years for the very first time,” said Becky Griffin, the village's executive director.

“It’s a lot of risk and reward to a project like this,” says Zachary Bowen, owner of Fine Finishes Custom Painting.

“Visibly, they’ll see that the colors are much more vibrant,” Bowen said.

Despite the work funded by a state grant, the old-school charm remains.
