DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – Teenagers in Durham are speaking out about gun violence, telling local leaders they don't feel safe in the city.
Just two weeks ago, 17-year-old Dominic Chappell lost his life at the Damar Court apartments in Durham after a shooting that sent bullets flying through the neighborhood.
Michael Kirkland, 14, witnessed a similar incident years ago when a shootout unfolded right in front of him.
"I want to be safe to walk outside and go to the store or play with my friends without getting shot or without getting scared or running in the house and telling my mom things," Kirkland said.
On Friday at the Weaver Street Recreation Center, several teenagers voiced their concerns to candidates running for mayor, city council and district attorney.
