DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) -- The Durham County Sheriff’s Office held its annual back-to-school and "Stop the Violence" fair on Saturday.
Hundreds of students got free supplies and valuable lessons to help reduce teen-related violent crime in Durham.
“I’m really happy to be here,” one young girl said.
The sheriff's office and community partners hosted the 3rd Annual “Stop The Violence And Cease Fire" event Saturday at Memorial Stadium as part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods effort.
“We understand the impact that a new school year has on our community, my family, our school system,” said Durham County Chief Deputy Justin Ellerbe.
Deputies and partners aim to build community and reduce gun violence.
This year so far, 18 juveniles have been shot in Durham alone.
