Last spring, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources paused a pilot program to round up Canada geese identified as a threat to public health and lethally gas them.

But the question remains: What can be done about large numbers of geese that leave their droppings on playgrounds, beaches, sidewalks and parks?

Clarkston has been grappling with that question for some time.

City Manager Jonathan Smith said he frequently received complaints this year about the geese at Depot Park and around the Mill Pond.

Smith estimated there were 50-60 geese living at the park last spring. Kids on the playground had to step around goose droppings, prompting so many complaints that Smith said the city felt obligated to act.

The city received a permit from the DNR to destroy nests and eggs. The DNR say
