LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - The roof was torn off of two of the Nebraska State Penitentiary’s housing units on Saturday. No injuries were reported as a result, but now hundreds of inmates are in limbo, and the facility is left with major repairs.
Nearly 400 inmates inside were displaced. State senators Ashlei Spivey and Terrell McKinney visited the facility on Monday morning to check in on the current conditions and the plans for the future.
State Sen. Ashlei Spivey said that after her walkthrough, she believes the warden is doing their best, but everyone involved must still do better.
Spivey said that she and her colleagues were able to discuss both immediate and long-term changes needed to create a comfortable living environment.
