LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - A major gas leak in northeast Lincoln has shut down part of a road for hours, Lincoln Police say.

Officers reported around 9:20 a.m. Wednesday that 33rd Street between Holdrege and Potter streets, located near UNL’s East Campus, is closed due to a gas leak. Police said this occurred after a construction crew hit a 2-inch gas line near the street.

Black Hills Energy estimated it will be closed for at least four hours for repairs.

Lincoln Fire and Rescue is assisting in blocking traffic until barricades can be put in place.

Officers are asking the community to avoid the area and use alternate routes until further notice.
