VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Virginia Beach City Council is asking Oceanfront retailers to voluntarily remove merchandise, such as T-shirts, with vulgar messages from public display.
“We’re asking kindly for our storefront owners to help us raise the bar at the Oceanfront, on Atlantic Avenue, and improve our image,” said City Council member Worth Remick.
Information provided to City Council with a proposed resolution on the matter, which was approved unanimously on Tuesday, stated, “The proliferation of such displays creates an unwelcoming environment for the very families to whom the city markets itself and the city’s residents.”
The information also stated the city decided to ask for voluntary participation because the legal standard for obscenity is very difficult to prove.
