KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - The University of Nebraska at Kearney is no stranger to having to deal with budget shortfalls.

In 2023, UNK had to make up for a more than $4 million deficit . Now in 2025, UNK Chancellor Neal Schnoor is letting the campus community know hard decisions will likely have to be made.

In a letter sent out Monday, Schnoor reminded everyone of NU President Jeffrey Gold and system colleagues discussing that they will have to address structural budget deficits.

Schnoor said UNK is not immune.

In the letter, he said since July 1, he has engaged the leadership team in a systematic evaluation of UNK’s budget.

“Our revenues are lagging escalating expenses, and we must address a $4.5 million deficit across the biennium,” Schnoor said.
