MOUNTAIN CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — A proposed Bitcoin mine that would have required a rezoning to open is off the table for now after the Mountain City Board of Mayor and Aldermen failed to approve the rezoning Tuesday night, Mayor Jerry Jordan told News Channel 11.

No one made a motion to approve the second and final reading of an ordinance that would have zoned property just off Highway 421 from B-3 to B-4 — a move that would have paved the way for Bitcoin miner CleanSpark to construct a 30 megawatt facility on Rainbow Road. The proposal drew significant public opposition from the time it was announced several months ago.

The motion had passed on first reading by a three-to-one vote. Jordan said the turnabout came because people opposed to the proposal had threatened the town with a lawsuit
