CLARKE COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) — The City of Jackson is mourning the death of a student after a car crash. For those who knew her, the loss is profound.

Shermya Gamble was just beginning her junior year at Jackson High School and was eager about what it would bring.

"She came to me wanting to do color guard," Band Director Jeff Weaver said. "During her sophomore year, she excelled at everything that she was going off of, and she was the type of person who, as many of the things here show, was extremely well liked."

One week after the start of the year, her dreams were cut short after a single vehicle wreck.

Jackson Police say the crash was around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday on Industrial Road. They say the 16-year-old student was on her way to school when it happened.
