EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Leaders in East Lansing are responding after the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) declared it the only sanctuary city in Michigan.

East Lansing officially declared itself a sanctuary city in 2023.

Under sanctuary city policies, local law enforcement is prohibited from collecting or sharing information with federal immigration authorities to aid in immigration enforcement.

At a City Council meeting Wednesday night, Councilman Mark Meadows affirmed that the city has no plans to reverse its stance.

“‘Sanctuary policies impede law enforcement and put American citizens at risk by design.’ Completely false,” said Meadows while reading the DOJ’s statement.
