HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Students at Longfellow Elementary School started their first day of school with a lot of positive momentum.

Along with their teachers, students were greeted by members of the Hastings College Baseball and Cheerleading teams who gave them cheers and high fives on the way into the building.

This year, the school is also set to open up their new ADA-accessible playground starting next week.

Principal Irina Erickson said the new playground is important because it’s used by several different kids in the community.

“Our playground is not just for Longfellow kids who are in the middle of town,” Erickson said. “We have kids coming from everywhere and not just for Hastings Public Schools. We have kids that attend the St. Cecilia neighborhoods or homeschooled kids that co
