LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Attorney General Dana Nessel has filed comments opposing the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) proposal to repeal the 2024 Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS) Rule.

The MATS Rule establishes nationwide limits on emissions of toxic air pollutants from coal- and oil-fired power plants, including mercury, other toxic metals, acid gases such as hydrogen chloride, and formaldehyde.

In 2024, the EPA updated these standards to reflect advancements in pollution control technology and to better protect communities.

The Trump administration is now proposing to repeal the updated standards and revert to the 2012 version.
