MILFORD, Conn. — Milford police identified a person who died after a blaze in a wooded area near Lowe's in Milford early Friday afternoon.

Firefighters in Milford responded around midday to the Lowe's on Old Gate Lane to investigate smoke at the back of the store, and they found the fire in the nearby wooded area. The area in the woods that caught fire was a homeless encampment, according to Milford Mayor Anthony Giannattasio.

The fire did not spread to the store, but a fire alarm went off in the store, officials said.

Police identified the person who died as 57-year-old Joseph Kane. It's not clear whether Kane lived at the encampment.

A firefighter received a minor injury, officials added.

Police said there is an active criminal investigation into the incident.
