DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — CBS 17 News Anchor Rod Carter sat down with Dr. Anthony Lewis, Superintendent of Durham Public Schools, to look back on his first year leading the district.

It had been exactly one year and three days since Dr. Anthony Lewis took the job.

When he walked in last August, he was met with a turbulent scene — weekly, if not daily, protests over a pay dispute involving about 1,300 staff members. Employees were not happy.

Rod Carter asked how the district navigated that difficult start.

“Those were some challenges that I knew coming in we had to address,” Dr. Anthony Lewis said. “So we addressed them head-on by ensuring that we had salary schedules staff could understand — to know exactly where they stood.”
