DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) -- Two wrecks involving several vehicles closed lanes and snarled traffic on Interstate 40 in Durham on Saturday afternoon, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
The first wreck, which appeared to involve more than six cars, happened just after 1:40 p.m. in the westbound I-40 lanes near Davis Drive, exit 280, according to the NCDOT.
The wreck near Davis Drive initially closed the two left lanes. NCDOT cameras showed seven cars pulled onto the shoulder after the wreck.
Traffic was backed up at least two miles into Wake County, according to DOT cams and traffic sensor data.
Less than 20 minutes later, a crash that appeared to involve four cars happened in the eastbound lanes near Fayetteville Road, exit 276.
