GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Four children are safe after they were stranded on a tiny island in Lake Superior.
A helicopter crew from the U.S. Coast Guard’s Traverse City Air Station responded early Sunday morning near the Black Beach Trailhead in Silver Beach, Minnesota.
According to the Coast Guard, the rescue call came in around 9 p.m., saying the conditions were too hazardous for the kids to try to return to shore. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Traverse City was dispatched to the scene, traveling nearly 290 nautical miles in approximately two hours to reach the tiny island.
All four children were safely hoisted up to the helicopter and transported to a nearby site to be checked out by paramedics and to be reunited with their parents.
