New Orleans East residents are committed to revitalizing their community two decades after Hurricane Katrina.

Before the hurricane, New Orleans East had a population of about 125,000 people, but now, only about 88,000 remain.

"It was the place to be. It really was. If you go back before Katrina," said Tangee Wall, president of New Orleans East Matters.

Wall described Lake Forest as a vital part of the community's economic structure, specifically highlighting its role in job creation and sales tax revenue.

Currently, barren land on Read Boulevard is all that remains of the Plaza Mall.

"It's sad to see it like this. After so long. Twenty years," Wall said.
