HOLYOKE, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - Police say there has been an increase in successful and attempted car thefts across the city.

Police say increase is driven by the fact that Kia’s and Hyundai’s produced between 2010 and 2021 are not equipped with an ignition mobilizer, making them easier to hot wire.

These car manufacturers may offer free safety upgrades for select models that are more vulnerable to these types of threats.

In the meantime, officials are urging residents to stay safe by installing steering wheel locking devices, making sure all your windows and doors are locked after exiting the car, and installing a car alarm.
