VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The City of Virginia Beach is gearing up for Hurricane Erin, both on land and in the water, as officials warn of rough surf, high winds, and the potential for flooding later this week.
All of Hampton Roads is under a Coastal Flood Warning from Thursday through Friday afternoon. The National Weather Service warns of breaking waves up to 10–12 feet, with water rising up to a foot in low-lying areas and numerous road closures expected.
Rough waters and dangerous rip currents are some of the biggest concerns, according to Tom Gill with the Virginia Beach Lifesaving Service.
“When it gets here, it's going to be so big and so rough and so dangerous, nobody should be in the water during this. We're going to do everything we can to keep people out of the water,” Gill said.
