WASHINGTON — Howard University president Ben Vinson III is stepping down at the end of the month just under two years into his tenure, the college's board of trustees announced Friday.

Vinson was named the university's 18th president in September 2023. His predecessor, Wayne A. I. Frederick, will come out of retirement to serve as interim president starting Sept. 1. Howard did not say why Vinson is stepping down, but in a quote, Vinson said he would be spending time with family and working to continue his research.
