OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Omaha City Councilman Brinker Harding expressed concern on Friday about what he says is an increase in public homeless encampments.

“I want to make sure we’re taking care of that now and stemming the growth of that so that it doesn’t become more of a problem,” Brinker Harding, Omaha city council member said. “bottom line to make sure the people who are involved in those situations are getting the help they deserve.”

Harding is proposing an update to the city’s ordinance on unauthorized encampments on public property.

It would outlaw the camps and anyone violating the ordinance could face a citation or arrest if they don’t take the opportunity to be taken to a shelter.
