Southwest Airlines will end a policy allowing plus size customers to take up an additional seat if needed for free.

The company announced the decision on its website, including updated policy specifics for before and after their open seating policy is also terminated.

On flights departing after January 27, 2026, any customers deemed "encroaching" into an adjacent seat's space will be required to pay additional fees.
