LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The Kentucky Department of Education is launching a new campaign raising awareness about the importance of school attendance.
The campaign is called ‘You Belong. Attendance Matters.’
“Schools are not there to place blame on anyone. They are there really to help them to address any barriers they may have,” said Christina Weeter, director of KDE’s Student Success Division.
KDE defines a student as chronically absent if they miss ten percent or more of their time in school. A parent’s parent’s economic situation, living situation, or work schedule could contribute to a student being chronically absent according to Weeter.
But still, she says students need to be in the classroom.
