MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) -- Screen time for students is officially being limited across Maryland's largest school district, meaning students returned to class Tuesday with a brand new cell phone policy in effect.

More than 160,000 students across 211 Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) are now subject to a new cell phone policy for the 2025-2026 school year, which says all students can still use their phones before and after the school day, including while on the bus.

Elementary and Middle School students must have phones off and put away all day, however, including during lunch and in between classes.

While high school students must also have their phones off and put away during instruction, they can use their devices in between classes and during lunch.
