MACON, Ga. — The Bibb County Sheriff's Office is working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement as a part of the 287(g) Program.
The program allows local law enforcement to train under ICE and perform some of their duties.
Ashley Deadwyler-Heuman, an immigration attorney in Macon, says the program doesn't concern her now but she does worry about it's reach.
"I don't want them to become local ICE officers and then inhibit the reporting of violent crimes," she said.
Deadwyler-Heuman says she works with many undocumented immigrants who are scared to contact law enforcement when they're victims of crimes out of fear of deportation.
She worries that if the 287(g) Program expands in Bibb County, it will only grow that fear among her clients.
