QUINCY (WGEM) - The Federal Trade Commission reported in 2024 consumers had lost more than $12.5 billion to fraud.
The Adams County Sheriff reports scammers claiming to be government officials or law enforcement are becoming a problem in Adams County and the surrounding area.
Sheriff Anthony Grootens said the sheriff’s department has recently received a report of a scammer targeting Adams County.
He said this scammer has been targeting people just north of Quincy and over the last few months has been given over $240,000. He said the scammer claims to be part of the Federal Communications Commission or FCC.
“Then, they’re going to declare that they’re either from immigration or FCC or state police or county police or city police and we have a warrant on your arrest and you need $50,000
