DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) - A mass shooting in Minneapolis on Wednesday is serving as a sobering reminder to Northland school communities that everyone must be prepared for an active shooter.

Hermantown and Duluth school district leaders say training and security measures have ramped up in recent years.

Duluth Public Schools superintendent John Magas said the district has increased student active shooter training to five times a year.

“It used to be less, but when we think about how often there are issues with fires or things of that nature, the chances of a shooting or something like that are far greater,” Magas said.

Nearby in Hermantown, superintendent Wayne Whitwam says the actual content of trainings has shifted as well, becoming more complex as more research is done.
