The alarm has been raised over an emerging drug with a sugary taste said by police to be aimed at children and teenagers.

The class B narcotic is called lean and was said to be a US trend now spreading to the UK. West Midlands Police said it contained paracetamol, which could cause permanent liver damage and even death if too much was taken.

The veil was lifted on the drug after the force revealed two people were arrested on suspicion of making it in Castle Vale last Thursday, October 16.

Lean, also known as Purple Drank, Dirty Sprite or Sizzurp, is a mixture of items including codeine, cough syrup and soda in the US, according to drug information site Talk to Frank .
