Chaves County residents may awaken in the morning to find frost on their Halloween pumpkins.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Albuquerque has issued a freeze warning for the Chaves County plains effective from late tonight through early Wednesday morning. Sub-freezing temperatures as low a 28 degrees are possible, according to the NWS.

Frost and freezing conditions could potentially kill crops and other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing, the NWS warned.

The agency advised area residents to protect tender plants from the cold.
