JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) - A local couple who took a trip to Jamaica recently evacuated the country after they found out Category 5 Hurricane Melissa was making its way towards the island.
The couple, Josh and Lori DeVoti, planned their trip back in February with a group of friends. The couple departed the United States on Oct.18 with the plan to return on Oct. 25.
"When we got there on Saturday, they had anticipated rain towards the end of the week, but there was really no talk of a hurricane until once we arrived," Lori DeVoti said.
The couple found out about the hurricane through local news outlets early in the week of their trip.
"It was probably Monday or Tuesday, and when we woke up Wednesday, I said, 'I really think we should probably consider leaving early,'" Josh DeVoti said
