GREENVILLE, S.C. —
The South Carolina State Guard is stepping in to help families struggling after the recent federal SNAP benefits shutdown.
Brigadier General William Hollingsworth, Deputy Commanding General of the South Carolina State Guard says assisting the people in South Carolina during a time of need is part of their mission.
"Obviously, there are people in the state of South Carolina now that due to the food situation, are in need, and so that's why we're here, we're here to help," he says.
Troops are partnering with Harvest Hope Food Bank to distribute thousands of pounds of food to families across the state.
At the Greenville site, volunteers and Guard members worked side by side, stacking boxes, loading trucks, and preparing meals for distribution, and the lines were long.
