BISMARCK, ND (KXNET)- Their job is to feed hundreds of hungry kids every day.

But just like cooking at home, these school cooks can always use a few new ideas. That's why they signed up for a cooking class being offered at United Tribes Technical College. The class was hosted by professional chefs from North Dakota State College of Science along with the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction.

The instructors were showing the cooks how to use recipes that use less salt and sugar. The cooks were mixing up banana bread, cinnamon roll muffins, lower-sodium chili, and granola.

"But this is empowering them to know that it is doable and feasible to make recipes that are reduced sugar while still being satisfying for the students and appealing for them," Amy Nelson NDDPI child nutrition
