MEMPHIS, Tenn. - It's estimated that 12 percent of Americans have some form of diabetes. In the Mid-South, that number is actually greater: 15 percent, meaning more than 130,000 people struggle with the condition. Of that number, there are at least 10,000 people who have Type-1 diabetes, meaning they have to have insulin every day to live.

Friday, beginning at 2:00 p.m., endocrinologist Dr. Kashif Latif will host a symposium on Type-1 diabetes at Baptist Memorial Hospital's Garret Auditorium. Several of the region's top diabetes specialists will be on the panel to talk about treatment, the stages of Type-1 diabetes, and early detection of the disease.
