KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — As temperatures continue to drop, families across East Tennessee are using various methods like space heaters to warm their homes. Knoxville Fire Department Assistant Chief Mark Wilbanks said every family should follow a few simple tips to stay safe.
“Number one is checking the cords on the heaters, making sure your cords are still in good shape, making sure that your outlets that you're going to use are in good shape. Always plug your space heaters directly into an outlet. Never use an extension cord,” said Wilbanks
Wilbanks advises people to make sure your space heater is clean before usage and keep them at least three feet away from flammable objects in your home.
